Orphan Programme: Introduction
Kumbo subdivision is one of the biggest centers for health care. This is due to the presence of the two biggest hospitals of the Northwest province, which are the Shisong Catholic hospital and the Banso Baptist Hospital (BBH). The Shisong catholic hospital has been for the past 30 years been trying to tackle the problem of orphans in the subdivision by creating an orphanage. The origin of this orphanage was as a result of the presence of the afore mentioned hospitals wherefore children of deceased mothers or parents ended up in the orphanage. With time, more and more or new problems which consisted of social reinsertion, family disintegration, more cases due to economic crisis and HIV/AIDS prevalence came into the limelight and this resulted to the gradual closure of the Shisong orphanage. Today, the number of orphans keeps on increasing with reducing care for them. From this it may be right to conclude that this category of people will certainly be a problem in the community giving the raison d'etre for something to be done to see their proper up bringing.
Consequences
The direct consequence of this problem is the presence of so many orphan children in the subdivision ands the entire division as a whole. At the moment KUDOC is engaged in the collection of statistics and data on the situation of orphans for better appraisal. The indirect consequence that the community will be open to if nothing is done is an increase number of street children, increase in juvenile delinquency and theft.
What has been done?
Each year KUDOC receives constant requests from pupils and students asking for assistance to meet up with schooling requirements. For the past three years, we have taken care of 10 pupils and 5 students each year. Our assistance consisted of providing the necessary school fees and books. This means that a total of only 45 orphans have benefited from KUDOC sponsorship for the past 3 years and there are more and more requests coming as the number of orphans keeps on rising.
The way forward
KUDOC is trying to reach people of goodwill who wish to sponsor a child be it at primary school level or at secondary school level. This can be done by contacting KUDOC coordinator or projects Officer.
Sponsors Needed !!!
It is estimated by KUDOC that 25,000 Frs ($50.00) can keep an orphan kid in secondary school for a year (15,000 Frs for Fees and 10,000 Frs books and uniforms subsidy). For primary pupils it is estimated that 10,000 Frs will take care of the school needs of an orphan child.
